Paper Prints Vs. Canvas Prints – Which Should You Choose?

Posted by admin in learning photography blog

When it comes to choosing between photo and canvas prints, some photographers can have a hard time. But this decision doesn’t have to be as hard as it sounds. There are some different perks to each one, and for those that want to do larger prints, canvas is the way to go. Here are some of the main reasons why you want to choose canvas prints over paper prints when you are producing larger photos.

Although paper prints offer you a much wider varitey of papers too choose from, you have to weight these capabilities before you choose. For example, you can purchase some of the hundreds of types of paper out there to create paper prints for clients that will help to enhance the photo in some way. Clarity, color, detail, there are papers out there that help to magnify all of these things in photo prints. Canvas doesn’t have a lot of choices, it’s canvas. And, canvas prints will not be as crisp as paper prints will be when they are completed. But that is the beauty of canvas prints. They are meant to be softer, less detailed, to imitate an oil painging. And, they are meant to be enjoyed from a distance, not right up on top of them.

Another thing that you want to look at before you make your decision is the size of the print that you want to create. Fine art photo paper will only be so large, and will have to be matted and then framed – which costs extra money. About the largest that you will be able to go with fine art photo paper and matting is 40X60 inches in the US, which is the larges mat board out there. You can go a bit larger if you want, but then the costs start to rack up as you get into custom matting and framing and many customers don’t want that extra expense.

Canvas prints however, don’t pose this type of problem. A canvas print can actually be put onto stretcher bars and then stretched to just about any size imaginable – just like an oil painting. And the different types of frames that you have available to you suddenly offer you so many beautiful ways to create a wonderful work of art that will impress any client.

Of course, you have to seal them both, especially paper prints. Here’s why, the printer inks have to be totally encapsulated to avoid any unwanted exposure from the elements, like UV rays and ozone. You also have to make sure that any sealer you choose is water resistant to help save the print from humidity and more. Keep in mind that with canvas prints, the ink sinks deep into the canvas, locking it in, while paper prints only hold the ink on the surface of the print. So, you have to use a better protection on paper prints that can cost more and won’t last nearly as long as printing on canvas. It’s easy to see why you would want to create your larger prints on canvas to help create a beautiful work of art that will last for decades.

Great Way To Learn Photoshop

Posted by admin in learning photography blog

As an amateur photographer I’ve utilized Photoshop for several years. Remembering the manuals and all the books I purchased I wish I had bought a Photoshop for beginners video tutorial. Oh, I have found my way around in fundamental Photoshop procedures however a great video tutorial would have saved a lot of aggravation and money.

Photoshop manuals and many how-to books are succinct and well crafted. Nevertheless if you’re one who scans a couple of sentences and then begins clicking on a photo you might end up frustrated and have a messed-up photograph. Been there, done that.

If you’re one who reads and analyzes every word you still might end up aggravated since it seems the manuals tend to be created for rocket scientists who plan to visit the moon and take pictures. Well, perhaps I exaggerate a little. But it’s challenging to create in your mind many of the instructions. Photoshop for beginners would have made it easier.

I got a good deal of encouragement from friends and fellow photographers. Some of the early suggestions were, “Once you understand ‘Curves’ (or ‘Levels’, or ‘Layers’) Photoshop will be a snap.” My response was usually “huh, sure”. I had no clue what they could be talking about. So I dived into the program and manuals and truly struggled to learn while spending quite a few hours studying. There had to be a better method to learn Photoshop for beginners.

You can read, re-read, practice and learn. However, when someone is standing over your shoulder giving you click-by-click instructions you learn Photoshop more quickly and retain more. Video tutorials approach coaching in a similar manner. Presently there are many video tutorials to teach Photoshop for beginners. The one I favor is Learn Photo Shop Now, or, as its referred to, Photoshop Fast Track For Newbies! A person can learn the basics of Photoshop in 2 hours! Click here to check it out for yourself.

Taking Pictures of Tigers for Stock Photos

Posted by admin in learning photography blog

The tiger’s name is Safari. He is beautiful. Not yet fully grown, he still weighs over 400 lbs. I had recently asked an animal trainer who I knew worked with him if she had worked with him lately. She answered that some people found the possibility of death exciting, but she didn’t.

Right now, I was lying on my back looking up at the tiger, and he was looking down at me. He casually reached out with a huge paw and tapped me on the side of my head, then turned his attention to a large chunk of raw meat that had been placed on the platform expressly to draw his attention away from me.

I had hired Safari for a stock photo shoot. Among the photographs I wanted to get was one of the tiger leaping at the viewer, which in this case was me. I was lying under a short platform with just my head and arms exposed. I was shooting Safari as he leapt from a taller platform down to the shorter one. Between each leap a fresh piece of meat was placed on the platform to persuade him to leap, and to keep his attention from me. Aside from that one little tap Safari paid absolutely no attention to me as I fired away.

Recognition, Affection and Snarls

For a while he was even starting to like me. Stephanie Taunton, Safari’s owner and trainer, explained that the “chuffing” that he greeted me with was a sign of recognition and affection. That, however, didn’t last long. Something caught Safari’s attention and he turned and rose up in one swift action, hitting his nose on one of the platforms. His nose began to bleed, and unfortunately, I was standing right next to him. Safari associated the pain with me. From that moment on whenever I would get near he would no longer “chuff”, but snarl instead. It was a lot more fun to hear him chuff than to hear him snarl!

Bruised Ribs and a Headache

At one point during the shoot his attention was again caught by something. This time he popped up and began to lope towards the fence of the enclosure we were photographing in. I will never forget seeing, for just an instant, the chain around his neck stretched taught to the hand of one of his trainers, and the trainer stretched taught, completely horizontal to the ground. She hit the grass hard and was dragged for the fifteen yards or so, until Safari lost interest in whatever had attracted him, and came to a stop.

She only suffered bruised ribs. Safari had been raised by Stephanie from a kitten, and at least outwardly had the disposition of, well, kind of a mischievous puppy. Obviously, though, he has to be respected for the powerful animal he is.

Another relatively innocent, but eye-opening story about Safari, told to me by another animal trainer involved an incident on a movie set. It seems at one point he heard a “thump, thump, thump”. It turns out the thumping was the noise of a trainer’s head hitting each step as he held tightly on to the Tiger’s leash while the powerful animal bounded up the stairs.

More Stock Photos Waiting

I have only created a few stock pictures from the shots I did with Safari. Some rainy day when things slow down a bit I am looking forward to getting back into that material and with the help of Photoshop, creating some great-selling and fun-to-look-at tiger photographs.

How to keep maternity photography natural yet impressive

Posted by admin in learning photography blog

Being pregnant is one of the important dreams of most women but it is equally important for would be fathers too. During pregnancy period, mothers go through vivid experiences and many of them are so new, unique and pleasant that they want to store these feelings for forever. Maternity photography is a great way to capture those emotions filled moments for forever. This photography differs from general purpose photography as it is focused more to capture facial expressions, changes in physical activities like walking, standing or sitting and appearance of particular area of the body instead of being primarily focused upon the beauty. Professional photographers emphasize more upon the natural aspect of maternity photography. Dresses, poses and the location play important role in making maternity photos natural and realistic.

Selection of the dress for maternity photography session depends upon the location. If it is a park, prefer to put on something comfortable and casual. If you are going to a studio, you have many options. Flowing type dress exposing your belly is a good option. Wide range of pre-pregnant clothing is available in stores otherwise you may design one yourself also. For designing pre-pregnant clothing you don’t need to be a qualified and experienced fashion designer as these are not concerned with fashion or fitting. It depends upon you how much or less you want to expose your belly in the portrait. Casual low waist jeans-shirts, skirts or white dresses are a big ‘No’ for maternity photo sessions.

Professional photographer will suggest you different poses for the session. Hear his advice but prefer you comfort first. Poses depend upon the location and background. Suppose, if it is a park, lying down on a sheet can’t be considered as a natural pose. Walking, standing near flowers, surrounded by the kids may be good poses that make the in-park pregnancy period photos more natural. If you are in the later stage of pregnancy, in-house photography would be convenient. If you don’t have costly decoration pieces or very impressive interior decoration, don’t worry. By changing the curtains, bed sheets, sofa covers, your dresses, hairstyles or re-adjusting the back ground articles, you may bring freshness in the photographs that are shoot in a single session. Half lying, eating, lying flat, sitting on a lawn chair with pet around etc are good poses.

Choices of poses, dresses and locations for maternity photography are unlimited. Selection depends upon comfortable level, pregnancy stage and personal likings. Maternity photographs should reflect your real culture, living style and physical appearance. Maternity photographs with natural look are more impressive and heart touching.

Work From Home With Your Digital Camera…Part 2

Posted by admin in learning photography blog

Can you work from home with your Digital Camera? This is a question that I am sure a lot of readers want answers to. In these tough economic times, everyone is looking for ways to supplement their income, or possibly to replace a lost income. In part one, I talked a lot about what could be called “Photography 101″. Most of that information has brought us up to about 30 years ago when Sony came out with the first CCD (charged-coupled-device). Even though the images were saved to a “disk”, they could only be viewed on a television screen. But in the late1980′s, you needed “Nerd 101″ or “Geek 102″ to be able to patch your camera to you television. I apologize if I offended anyone with that statement, but back in the 1980′s…I could not have done it. In 1990, Kodak unveiled the first, fully Digital Camera and made it available to the consumer. But because of the cost, many photographers stayed with their conventional 35MM formatted cameras.

At that point in time, digital imaging used a type of electronic image sensor to store the image as electronic data rather than on “film”. The idea of “photo manipulation” that can be done digitally today, could not be done with film. In the early to middle 2000′s, most 35MM SLR (single lens reflex) makers announced that they would no longer make SLR (Single Lens Reflex) cameras.

Okay. So now were are coming into the age of the “Digital Camera”. As I stated in Part 1, there are a wide variety of DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras on the market. I do not endorse, nor do I recommend any company or brand. However, I do suggest that if you want to shoot and sell top quality photographs, that you should invest your money in a DSLR (if Digital Photography is your medium…see part 3) that has lens changing capabilities. What do I mean by that? Choose a camera that you can add different lens to. Most companies have DSLR’s that have the same style of screw in/screw off lenses like my old Olympus 35MM has. Choose the one that is the most appropriate for what you are trying to accomplish. There are many web sites to check out as well as looking to your local photography store.

So just what is it that you want to accomplish with your photography? I would recommend staying away from the cell phone photography and videos if you want to sell photographs. There may be a market, and you may luck up and get a few marginal shots, but the overall quality just is not there. This is a niche that you can only be used for e-mailing purposes or creating videos to put on those types of sites. Stock Photo Sites and Magazines probably will not give you a chance at selling your photographs.

Now that we have covered some basics, such as boring history like Photography 101, camera’s…blah…blah…blah. It’s time to look at the meat of this system.. Making money. Earning Income. Working at home or from home. What is your style…what does your eye see…Take photographs of what interests you. If you have a beautiful flower garden. If you are a sports enthusiast. Nature or wildlife. Scenic or Outdoors, that is not what matters. The important thing is that you find your niche…what make you happy or what your eye sees.

Tips for Turning Hobby Photography into a Full Time Home Business

Posted by admin in learning photography blog

If you love taking photographs and own a decent digital camera, computer and have access to the internet, you can easily turn your hobby into a nice source of additional income. Selling photographs online is a growing industry and a valuable source of income for many photographers. For some, it can even become a full-time home business.

For those just learning or starting out in this business, though, knowing where to begin can be a bit overwhelming. So here are a few tips to help you break into the business of selling your photographs online.

1) Find the Right Place to Sell Your Photos. There are many different places to sell photographs online. Most newcomers, however, will find the most luck with submitting their photos to stock photo agencies. The larger stock photo agencies have hundreds, even thousands, of customers purchasing stock photographs from them daily. These photographs are used for a wide range of website content and advertising purposes, and the pay you receive will be dependent on the agreement you have with the agency and the rights you decide to sell. Often, however, you will be selling the same photograph time and time, and earn a small amount (for example, $1) for each sale. This may not seem like much, but if you sell one photograph 100 times, it adds up. And if you have 100 photographs that sell 100 times… well, you do the math!

2) Find the Right Photos to Sell. Often it is not the most artistic photographs that are the most successful. Frequently, well taken photographs of common objects well sell the best with stock photo agencies. Taking photographs of people is always a bit more complicated, since model releases are required (although you can choose to use yourself as your subject, to make things easier). For this reason, sticking to photographs without humans in it may be easiest while you are still learning the ropes.

3) Make Sure Your Photographs are Found in Popular Online Searches. You need to learn how to research on what kinds of photographs are most in demand. Much of this will center on the keywords that people are entering into search engines like Google.

4) Submit Only Quality Photos. Blurred, fuzzy or otherwise poorly shot photographs will not only not sell well, they will can also damage your relationship with the stock photo agency that is selling your photographs. Take the time to take quality photographs and only submit the best for sale.

5) Improve Your Photographic Techniques over Time. As with any business, the more you learn and the better your technique, the more profitable you will be. Fortunately, if photography is also a hobby that you love, learning more about it will not be a chore but and enjoyable activity.

How professional wedding photography can help you?

Posted by admin in learning photography blog

Professional wedding photographers might be a trifle more expensive than the amateur ones. Despite their being more expensive, people still call professional wedding photographers Sydney to get the best possible photographs of probably the most memorable day of their lives. Obviously, there are clear benefits of hiring the professionals for wedding photography which overrides the monetary compensation part. These can be listed below:

1. The first important benefit is that the work is accomplished in the most efficient way. There is no wastage of resources, in terms of wrong and unnecessary shots. Professionals do not go about clicking anything and everything. They have a very clear idea of what all moments, things and scenes need to be shot and what not. So, they just not produce a bundle of crap wedding photos at the time of presenting the album but far more relevant and important ones. When you are on a budget, this efficiency of work might save you more than costing you in terms of price of hiring a professional.

2. Professionals strive to take the best shots possible. Using the most advanced cameras and, equally importantly, their skill at capturing the moments of occasion, they would not let the most precious moments to go without being shot. When it comes to determining which is the time worth capturing in the camera and in what way, the professionals do have an edge over the others.

3. Professionals come fully prepared. With their cameras, lenses, tripods, flashes, memory cards and other paraphernalia, wedding photography Sydney comes easily to them. They do not leave anything to chance. Their fingers are well trained in using the camera quick and fast, for taking a good passing shot quickly. Their state of preparedness is something which put them in a higher league than the amateurs.

4. Handling guests: An amateur might be a little hesitant to ask the guests to come for a portrait photo. He may not be all that comfortable with the guests chipping in with their own set of camera shots, often creating disturbances. He might even get his attention diverted by the occasional disturbances of kids or elder people. But, professional wedding photographers Sydney know how to handle the guests in a way which does not annoy them and also, wedding photos are taken in good position and from right angle. A professional gets completely involved or absorbed in the event and then he can get sense moods and sensitivities of people and also retain focus on work. An amateur might find it difficult to achieve this crucial balance.

So, there is a clear and marked difference between a professional and an amateur in many aspects of this profession. With wedding photography requirements for such an important occasion as marriage, taking the amateur services might be too big a gamble to risk the memories of the occasion for a lifetime. Therefore, professionals are always in demand for covering important occasions with their expert camera skills.
