How To Choose a Digital Camera That’s Right For You

Posted by admin in learning photography blog

With all the dizzying assortment of digital cameras currently available, it’s confusing for the beginning photographer to understand which kind of camera to start with and what models might be best. First off, you need to consider how serious of a photographer would you like to be. Do quality photographs matter to you or do you just want to get the hang of it? What is your budget like? Are you gonna be traveling a good deal while using the camera? Once you have established your purpose, you can narrow your focus.

Essentially, you can get three varieties of digital cameras. Point and shoot compact digital cameras, high end digital single lens reflex cameras and hybrid cameras that are a combination of compact digital cameras and DSLRs.

For the everyday average photographer that takes photos of friends, family and pets and not so interested in quality, you have the compact digital. These are pretty inexpensive and good if you’re only starting out. They are really compact and light-weight weight, so you can fit them in a purse or pocket and carry them just about everywhere. The picture quality is not so good so if you’re much more serious or want to become more serious, you will be disappointed. The compacts have limited ISO, which means you can’t get good photos in low light like a DSLR can.

For your serious photographer, there is a digital single lens reflex camera. They range entirely from amateur quality to professional quality. The digital single lens reflex camera is equipped with a single reflex mirror which allows you to look at the view through a view finder. When you take the shot, the mirror moves aside so the image can be taken. The mirror makes these cameras much bulkier and harder to lug around. The image sensor is quite a bit bigger than a compact making the quality of the photo much better. There are also interchangeable lenses so you can get every focal point. Compacts have a very limited focal range. Learning how to use a DSLR can be quite daunting for any beginner. It would be best to learn photographic techniques first on a compact.

Hybrid cameras are fairly new and offer the best of all possible worlds. They don’t use a single reflex mirror, so they are less bulky, and are built with larger image sensors for great quality photos. They also have interchangeable lenses that can be changed with a regular DSLR camera. The hybrid cameras are also priced very reasonably. They’re excellent the mid market photographer, who does not want to buy high-end equipment yet, but wants better photos than your average point and shoot.

Remember, high megapixels do not necessarily mean higher quality photos. The biggest factor in image quality for digital cameras will be the size of the image sensor. The quality of the lens also weighs in heavily, in addition to experience and knowledge of the photographer.

5 Things To Know Before Hosting Your Favorite Photos

Posted by admin in learning photography blog

If you take photos, and good ones at that, then you can’t help but wanting to share your pics with others. After all, that’s one of the main reasons why we take pictures, right? Sharing an experience, a moment ‘caught’ in time with others is absolutely precious. But before you jump headfirst into hosting your photos with any old picture host, do a little research beforehand.

You see, what you don’t want to do is put your photos on any old website. Some picture hosting sites will entice you with low cost hosting, unlimited bandwidth or other slinky bonuses, but be careful. Always check out what you’re actually getting for what you spend. (The same goes for a free picture host). Here’s 5 things you want to keep in mind before you even think about signing up:

- Past and current user feedback

- User-friendliness – easy to upload your images?

- Customer support – Can you contact them if you need?

- Host reliability – good up-time, no broken links?

- Bonus features

The reason why you want to keep these factors in mind, especially when you’re paying for someone to host YOUR photos, is not just to make sure you get the best ‘bang for your buck,’ but so that you can best present (and share) your most prized photos. A quick browse for positive or negative customer and user feedback will reveal a great deal about your potential picture host.

Other things you can do is to check the FAQs, and check out their online help section. If they have a resourceful help section that’s current, and easy to find what you need, that’s always a good sign. You also want to be able to upload your images in a simple manner, and batch upload if you have hundreds to do. Is it easy to contact your picture host if you need advice?

Remember, if you’re paying to host your photos, you should expect excellent customer service!

How To Find A Professional Photographer in Detroit

Posted by admin in learning photography blog

If you live in the Detroit metropolitan area, you know that there are literally hundreds, if not thousands of photographers that claim to be professional photographers. Truth be told, they may say they’re a professional, but you need to have more than just a camera and a web site to be a professional photographer in Detroit.

When my wife and got married, we thought we had the best photographer in Detroit. We actually won a free engagement shoot with a local photographer, and he said all the right things. He showed us a portfolio (more on this later), and told us about the hundreds of weddings he’s shot and how happy his clients were.

The studio shots were amazing. I don’t think a better picture was ever taken of us, as the ones we got during the free engagement shoot. And why wouldn’t they be? The lighting was perfect. We were posed like models. Really, all he had to do was point the camera and click the button.

A week or so later, we went back to the studio to review the pictures. They were amazing. So, we asked to see his portfolio. And he oblidged. Little did we know that the portfolio he showed us was the studio owner’s portfolio, not the guy taking our picture.

So, based on the free engagement shoot and the portfolio, we hired what we thought was the best photographer in Detroit. Boy, were we wrong.

Fast forward to the wedding night. The ceremony was a candle light wedding, but the photographer did not bring the appropriate equipment for this type of lighting, so we do not have pictures of the actual ceremony. Needless to say, our wedding photos were a disaster.

So how do you make sure something like this doesn’t happen to your memorable event? Simple, just hire the best photographer in Detroit. Below are some helpful tips to help weed out the amateurs and find the professionals:

#1 Make sure you know who will be taking the pictures at your event and if he/she is a full time photographer. Ask him/her what they do the rest of the week. Find out what kind of education, background and experience they have with photographing your type of event. The more you know about your photographer, the better.

#2 Find out how many events like your’s they have worked. If your event is unique or has special effects, like candle light, put it in writing and make sure your photographer is well skilled in these types of events. Ask is they bring backup equipment.

#3 Ask for references and follow up on each and every one. Ask them what they liked about the photographer and what they didn’t like about them. Would they hire them again.

#4 Make sure you fully understand the contract. Ask if he/she provides a written guarantee. Insist that your prerequisites are included in the contract verbiage. Find out your photographer’s policy regarding proofs, negatives and delivery times. Is a deposit needed? And if so, how much? When is it due? Can you make partial payments?

For more helpful tips, check out the web page Photographer Detroit

Lastly, keep a journal with all this information. As you interview many different photographers for your special event, don’t rely on your memory to keep all this data in order. Hiring a professional photographer is expensive, so make sure you do your homework and write it down.

These tips will certainly give you enough information to help you filter out all the amateurs and find the best photographer in Detroit.

Getting Started in Aerial Photography

Posted by admin in learning photography blog

If you are considering getting up in the air and trying your hand at aerial photography, then this article is a must read for some quick tips that can greatly increase your success. Don’t be intimidated by working in this different environment; it is much easier than you would believe! Obviously a very large portion of the work rests on the pilot’s shoulders, and your workload and stress level will vary greatly based on their actions.

The best way to insure that you won’t end up overloaded during the flight is to take extra time on the ground with the pilot planning the photo mission. Do this at the actual aircraft. I am going to assume that you will be using a Cessna 152 or 172 for economical reasons. If you decide to spring for the Robinson R-22 helicopter, your job will be much easier, as there is no door in place for you to shoot around, and the pilot will always be flying low where some of the best shots are to be had. More on this below.

So, while you are sitting in the seat of the airplane on the ground, practice framing shots while aiming the camera out the window (which must have its limiter arm removed – easy to do with a screwdriver). You will notice right away that you will always be trying to avoid getting the wing tip and wheel in your shots. Have the pilot take your position for a moment to get a mental picture of what you will be dealing with. Most pilots have never flown aerial photography missions before and often assume they just need to gently circle around your target and let you do the rest of the work. Nothing could be further from the truth. For you to have any chance of success, the pilot needs to be constantly working all the controls to give you an open shooting “window”. For example, you might be circling your target at the perfect height and distance away, but the wheel is constantly in your shot. If the pilot banks the wing to move the wheel out of the way, now your shot angle will be steeper and may not work. The pilot may need to “yaw” the airplane instead, which will not be an obvious answer to them if they haven’t considered it on the ground first. So your goal on the ground is to get the pilot thinking about every possible way they can maneuver the airplane to give you a clean shot from your desired angle. Come up with a form of communication that will allow you to quickly relay to the pilot what it is exactly that you need. Just this basic bit of ground planning can make all the difference in the outcome of your photos.

As mentioned above, low flying altitudes can give you great photo opportunities. This is because there will be more depth to your photos with a horizon in the background. If you are shooting a very wide area, such as an entire town, it is easier to get some horizon in the shot without being that low. But if your subject encompasses a small area, you will need to be much lower. This is where shooting from a helicopter is a joy, especially since you won’t always be trying to keep a wingtip out of your frame (although you have to be aware of the rotor tips, which you may not even notice). If you are in an airplane, you will need to ask the pilot to line you up for your shot, then raise the wingtip at a precise moment so you can fire off a few frames. Again, the pilot will need to be “actively” flying the plane at all times to give you the most shooting opportunities.

Regarding camera equipment and settings, you should have at least a basic SLR body with a normal range zoom lens, and manually set the camera to shoot at the highest possible shutter speed. Depth of field is not important in aerial photography. Normal exposure setting is fine with the expectation that you will need to make post-production tweaks, and ISO 400 to give you a bit more shutter speed. Finally, go with auto focus.

These tips will help you make the best out of your first aerial photography flight. If you find after landing that it is something you want to continue to pursue, there are a number of great books out there that will help you advance to the next level.

Good luck and blue skies!

Reasons Why Canvas Prints From Photos Are So Popular

Posted by admin in learning photography blog

Canvas has become a popular medium for photo printing and if you haven’t seen a photo on canvas yet, you are missing out. Canvas has texture and depth that lends a pizzazz to a photograph like no other medium. The elegance of canvas breathes life into a photograph and makes you smile every time you look at it. Of course, the source photo directly relates to the print so the better the quality of the photo, the better the quality of your canvas.

Once you make the decision to print your photo on canvas, you choose the professional to do it. You will want your photo prepared to be the best it can be. You may want to remove something from the image or crop and re-center or perhaps it is a traditional photograph that is old, faded or has other problems that need attention. When your photo is sent to a professional, it should be examined and evaluated for the intended size and purpose. If there are any issues, you should be advised of the issues/limitations so you can make the determination to continue, send another photo or cancel the order.

Many people will continue with a not-so-good traditional photograph or even digital image because of the sentiment attached to the image, making it too important not to print on canvas. The reason to print on canvas will not only give greater longevity to the image but it gives the image a satisfying dynamic that is really difficult to explain. This does not mean that you should be sloppy in your selection of image(s), it means to not be hog-tied by perceived limitations. Rule of thumb, place the order and let the professionals evaluate and advise. If you are not comfortable with that, email (or snail mail) the image to them and ask their opinion.

One of the best things about photos on canvas is creating a piece of art that is unique. The canvas means something to you because of the subject of the image. You can do it to decorate your home, to simply have a favorite photo brought to life on canvas or to give as a gift. Canvas photo prints are affordable and perfect as meaningful, unique gifts: birthdays, graduations, weddings, anniversaries, thank you’s, commemorations, and just because.

What type of photos? Family, kids, babies, pets, vacation scenes, landscapes, flowers, birds, horses, buildings, homes, cottages, beaches, boats, clouds .. whatever you want and whatever pleases you.

Join the elegance and fun of printing your photos on canvas today.

How to Take Great Pictures of Kids

Posted by admin in learning photography blog

Some professional photographers have an uncanny ability to capture amazing depth of emotion and honesty in their work with children. Other photographers shoot pictures of young people that may be perfectly focused, expertly lit and properly posed, but somehow lack personality.
But how, exactly, do the good ones do it? Is it sheer luck, a keen photographic eye or do they have some simple “tricks of the trade” tucked up their collective sleeves? When it comes right down to it, what every parent wants in a portrait of his or her child, is something that will forever reflect a precious piece of the child’s personality at that moment in time.

This is another “Photography How To” article from Emma David. Emma is a staff writer and photographer for the leading free online digital photography tips and lessons site, FreePhotoCourse.com. In this article, she reveals some pro photographer secrets for taking award-winning portraits of children.

Whether the subject is your own child or one of another parent, photographing kids can be a challenging, yet, highly rewarding activity! On one hand, beyond all of the usual photo technique and composition rules you would normally need to observe, you also have the added dimension of working with a photo subject who can be highly unpredictable, unfocused and may have far more energy than any adult could ever muster. On the other hand, children put it all out there. They tend not to mask their emotion and personality like most adults do. What you get is pure and honest.
If done properly, the result can be a great deal more than merely “cute”. Really good pictures of children have an authenticity that’s beyond question and can tell you a lot about the child’s personality or mood.
Here are some tips that will help you survive the child photo session in one piece and to produce portraits that will melt hearts!

1. Decide on the Style of Portrait
You need to consider, in advance, whether you want the session to produce a style of portraits that is formal, casual, candid, active or just plain silly or fun. If you are working for a paying customer, you need to establish this with the parent before the day of your photo session. Many photographers will blend a variety of portrait styles in one session, but you should plan for what you or your client feels should be the predominate picture look.

2. Choose Suitable Locations
Increasingly, today’s photographers are doing family photo sessions at their clients’ homes. This is a great trend for both the photographer and the subject, and it’s an even better idea when the subject is a child. Conducting a shoot at the child’s own home has the distinct advantage of a relaxed environment that helps to remove some of the artificiality that comes with any photo session. It also carries the added benefit of having a lot of toys and favorite things within reach that the child may like to play with or use. Favorite things and special places, both indoor and out, can enhance moods and reveal aspects of the child’s personality.

For outdoor locations, beyond the back yard, you may also consider nearby parks, forested areas, local landmarks and places with natural water features. If the child is into a particular sport or organized activity, you might consider including a related site for the shoot, such as a ball diamond, athletic field, dance studio, etc.

If the style calls for a formal portrait, consider bringing a portable studio to the client’s home (or invest in one to use at your own home if you are wearing two hats as both the photographer and the parent). Bring along your seamless paper backgrounds and stand system, along with portable softbox lighting.

3. Time is of the Essence in Formal Child Portraiture
If you or your client expect formal portraiture to be part of the photo session, then be aware that the child’s attention span will be far shorter compared to that of any other type of photography. Other styles of portraiture that are more casual, candid or activity-based allow for a greater measure of comfort and physical activity, making them a better bet for the younger subject.

In my experience, a child’s attention span, mood and cooperation are at their best during the first five to ten minutes, particularly if the boy or girl is dressed-up. If you can’t get your best work done within that very short window, you’d be better off letting the child take a break and do something else for fifteen or so minutes before trying to regroup. Forcing the child to sit still for extended periods until you have the exact picture you have in mind will result in unflattering expressions, an unwillingness to pose and a less-than-cooperative demeanor.

Good advance planning in the areas of equipment needs, exposure, backgrounds, etc., will help you maximize this short formal posing window.

4. Shoot in Continuous or Burst Mode
You will thank me for this one! I’ve read so many advice articles about child photography that dwell on lighting, exposure and other aspects of photographic technique. But they tend to miss one very important secret that pro photographers use regularly when it comes to their vertically-challenged subjects!

Kids move around quickly. Kids change their expressions suddenly and without notice. Kids do the cutest things and put themselves into the most amazing photographic situations and then…it’s gone before you’ve snapped your shutter! When doing outdoor photography that does not require regular or fill flash, set your DSLR to “continuous” or “burst” mode. Popping-off 10 or so frames within a few seconds opens-up a world of candid opportunities and amazing expressions that would otherwise be missed.

5. Plan an Activity
This one’s easier if you are the parent, as opposed to being hired to photograph someone else’s child. Nevertheless, planning an outing or activity that is of interest to the child can help generate a great deal of authentic emotion and can bring-out certain aspects of the subject’s personality.

6. Smile, Smile and Keep Smiling!
I find it odd that cranky photographers who don’t particularly like working with children expect anything more than the cookie-cutter, lifeless results they normally get. I’ve even seen photographers bark posing orders at their young subjects and have wondered what on earth they were thinking!

Remember to smile a lot, because it can help reinforce your eagerness to be there and can warm-up a working relationship far faster than a serious face ever can. Even if you are generally an upbeat sort of person, remember that children are extremely keen when it comes to sizing-up the adults around them. They instinctively know whether or not the adult really cares about them, is putting-on an act, is happy and wants to be there. Liking children is a good start. They may be a bit of a challenge compared to your adult subjects, but if you do your part, the results can be amazingly pure and expressive!

550D Review of DSLR

Posted by admin in learning photography blog

Anyone can be a professional photographer today. Digital photography has paved the way into capturing photos a lot less complicated via dependable options. Film can get exposed and is usually really expensive to pay for and develop while digital photography has made it as easy as point and shoot. And with a huge amount of competition out there, technologies just keeps getting better and better.

Digital cameras come in an array of shapes and sizes. Commercial and consumer DLSRs are compact and convenient. They are great for taking on family travels or special occasions. For a far more professional look, there are Digital slr cameras. These are typically more professional cameras intended for better quality and professional photographers.

You will find there’s wide selection of lenses for professional cameras. Dslr cameras feature various lenses for different types of photographs. A standard lens for standard photos, a wide-angle lens for photographs that capture a larger area of scenery, telephoto for far away shots, and macro lens that’s used for that exciting close-up detail.

There are a few standard tips for taking photos using a DSLR. Composition is definitely an art which should be completed in such a manner which is eye-catching to the viewers. Digital photography is merely another art that requires this kind of composition to be effective. Focus on the subject whenever possible. In the event you wear glasses, have them on when capturing the photograph especially if you shoot with a DSLR. Remember , getting a blurred photograph isn’t what you are looking for. And finally, if you want to be artsy you can try out the angles from the places you take the photo. A bird’s eye or bug’s eye view might be imaginative and fun.

If you’re searching for a digital camera that will suit you in function, level of quality, and cost, there are many reviews online. Whether it’s a Nikon D80, Canon Ixus, Sony Cyber-shot, or some other brand, there are so many to select from. You’ll find reviews and user’s experiences on the cameras in websites like Amazon.
